A very different pony today who produces LOADS of smegma and a thick penile crust very quickly, and subsequently needs cleaning every 3 - 6 months at least. There are many, many factors which can accelerate the rate of smegma production, including:🐎 Amount of sweat produced by the horse. 🐎 Size of penis - a larger one will hinder air circulation inside the sheath leading to more sweat, which then dries on the shaft of the penis eventually settling as a hard crust.🐎 Rate of skin renewal.🐎 Amount of turnout - being outdoors is great for the sheath as the air can circulate more freely.🐎 Breed/genetics. Horses designed for a colder climate, e.g. Highlands, Shetlands, etc, naturally produce an abundance of sebum as a waterproofing aid. Sebum is the greasy stuff that you find under the coat (and in the sheath!).🐎 Feel free to add any more in the comments that I've forgotten 😀. | Equine Hygiene UK
